I keep saying how a perk of freelancing is choosing when you work. So why would I choose to work on a statutory holiday? Like today, Canada Day? Is it just to get my newsletter out consistently? No, although the unscheduled do thrive on routine.
When I choose to work on a holiday (or “freelancer catchup day” I often like to call it), it’s often the kind of work that it’s hard to make time for on other days, like planning next steps in my business. During these kinds of “CEO days” I make space for reading articles and books that I’ve bookmarked, sometimes creating content for my own business to free up time when I’m busy later on, and thinking about what experiments I’d like to try next as a writer. I build in lots of breaks but also set myself specific intentions and goals so that at the end I can feel like I’ve moved ahead on the three to four topics I’ve set for myself to explore.
I also usually take the afternoon off! So that I get a long weekend as well. Just one with a bit of a business bonus.
