Feisty Freelancer Fridays
Long lunches, weekday matinees and sleeping in are all available to you...
I'm writing this newsletter at 8:00 p.m. on a Friday evening to make a point.
I write when I want to write.
Now, I'm not saying that I wait for some fickle muse to appear, far from it. Most of the time, 20+ years of experience means that the process for the writing I do most often (longform content like articles and blogs) is fairly routine. And sometimes I do write with difficulty, and it is like opening a vein as the misquote suggests.
So maybe I should be framing this as freelancing allows me to write when I want to, and take time off at the same time. So this afternoon when I wanted to take a long lunch with a friend, to celebrate the magic of sharing June as a birth month, I could say yes. And when my friend suggested we go thrifting afterwards, also yes. I did make sure I had my final story of the week in before I did all that, but there was nobody to check with before deciding to call it a day at noon. And nobody to slink around when I decided that I really should try to stick to my original plan to get this newsletter on Fridays, or at least keep up that streak through week two. I just went back to my desk and here I am.
The point is, that as many people already know, freelancing is a pretty fun lifestyle, for the freedom to choose your projects as well as the ability to set your own hours. To limit meetings. And office politics.
That said, as someone who runs her own business, I do work harder than many people I know. After all, at 100 percent commission (the less sexy way of describing freelancing) it’s up to me to make things happen. But it’s still all on my own terms.
Which brings me to another thing I did in the last couple of weeks, launch my first freelance course. That's right, the Feisty Freelancer Summer School is in session as of the first week of July. For 8 weeks over Zoom, I’ll help freelance-curious writers get their start, answer all their burning questions, and write a dream assignment with the goal to pitch. We’ll create a supportive community on Slack, and I’ll be available for another four weeks of follow-up as students take action on polishing up and sending out their piece. If you're interested, I'm offering an early bird discount until June 23 so feel free to check out the link below:

Have a great weekend everyone. And maybe make plans for a feisty breakaway yourself next week? What’s it going to be?
