Most of the time when I start a project, I do a lot of background research. Sometimes that leads to overthinking the project, which sometimes leads to hesitating on starting. Or not starting at all.
On rarer occasions, I just get going. It is sometimes a better route to overcome the overthink, ie an action taken tends to stay in action. That's what I did with this newsletter. While I've over researched markets for my Feisty Freelancer ebook (and still looking), I just went ahead and launched this substack on the basis of hearing it was an interesting new platform, having read a handful of others, and hearing about it first from my writing students (eavesdropping on young people is one route to learning what is up and coming).
So this week, I finally made time to catch up on my research. I looked on Substack itself for other newsletters to subscribe to, clicking on the Writer newsletter button and then searching Canadian writers, Canadian journalists and journalists and freelancer to find a few more. Then I went on google and searched top substacks to follow which led to a few more suggestions

So now I'm a subscriber to a few more newsletters, hoping to be inspired and study them as a guide to the form. I also came across a couple of how-to posts from established substack writers that I now subscribe to, maybe they will interest you if you are also contemplating this venture:
As I get into the rhythm of these newsletters I'm sure there will be some I end up really liking and others I unsubscribe from, just like podcasts. Regardless of that, cool to see so many people writing.
PS - I’m also launching a new Feisty Freelancer course for September - if you’re someone who is interested in learning how to freelance plus create your first killer assignment, all on zoom with likeminded learners, all in eight weeks, check out https://feistyfreelancer.com/courses/.
I really enjoyed this one, thank you.
